With gorgeous wooden decking that branches out to accommodate various activities, the elevated main area makes the most of the setting. Jutting out furthest from the lounge and dining room, one deck features the swimming pool, which overlooks the wilderness. Nearer the lodge is an outdoor seating area furnished with long sofas. Under canvas is a glassed-in dining room and small lounge. The design is impeccable, focusing on both comfort and high-spec luxury. You'll find no fault here!
With just four double tents and another family-sized option, Chikunto keeps things intimate. Like the main area, the tents are set on metre-high elevated platforms on the riverbank. The interiors are simple, sleek, and very comfortable, with deep netted beds, small sitting areas with modern sofas, en-suite bathrooms with walk-in shower, twin basins, and flush toilet, and a private outdoor lounge. Sliding glass doors allow unfiltered views of the landscape. The family room sleeps four, with a large shared bathroom.
With its wide cross-section of habitats, South Luangwa explodes with wildlife. Huge numbers of hippo and crocodile occupy the Luangwa River, and the park is known for its big cats – lion and leopard, especially. Game drives explore both sides of the river, although the Nsefu sector, on the eastern side, is especially good for sightings. If you're willing and able, walk safaris are a must. Conducted by expert guides, they offer another take on this intricate ecosystem.
