About Chikwenya Safari Lodge

Vamped-up lodge in Zimbabwe's heavenly Mana Pools region.
Chikwenya Safari Lodge hugs the eastern edge of Mana Pools National Park in a private 12,000-acre (almost 5000-hectare) concession of seasonal lakes, sprawling floodplains, dense woodlands and, of course, the powerful Zambezi River. Open from April to mid-November, the lodge allows all forms of exploration – day and night game drives, guided walks, and boat trips. The lodge is surrounded by a forest of albida trees, whose seedpods draw elephants in the dry season. Other wildlife is particularly rewarding too. With its simple, bush-friendly architecture and light-handed decor, Chikwenya is a more-than-comfortable safari base.

Property details

The property

The main area sits under elegant stretched canvas on an elevated deck. Fold-up sides allow the breeze to flow freely, and wildlife viewing is ever-possible. In the lounge, cushioned sofas and chaises have been arranged in a few intimate settings, begging you to sprawl. The dining room, with its long table, is where guests gather to chat and share meals. (Romantic tables for two can also be arranged.) Pull up a stool at the hardwood bar – designed for lingering.

The rooms

Chikwenya is a newly renovated camp, still in the process of becoming. Currently, there are six tents (one of which is a family unit), but a seventh, also a family tent, will be completed in April 2019. Raised boardwalks connect the tents, linking them to the main area. All come with either a king-sized or double twin-bed configuration, an en-suite bathroom with shower, basin and toilet. Lovely shaded verandas are ideal for midday sitting and siestas.

Activities

This area is filled to the brim with game, huge in both number and variety – from buffalo and elephant to lion, leopard, cheetah, hippo and crocodile, and exceptionally interesting birdlife. The region is also home to exceptionally diverse landscapes, and they encourage you to explore by vehicle, in a boat or on foot for some up-close encounters. Try all three options – drives obviously cover more ground at a quicker pace, whereas boat rides can be exciting or tranquil.
