The simple tented main area is elevated slightly to offer views of a natural spring that is a key water source in the area. Watch the near-constant procession of wildlife, or gaze at the views from the lounge and dining room, with their roll-up sides. Little emphasis has been placed on interior decor, but the lounge and dining room are, nevertheless, very well-equipped. In front is a campfire, the heart of evening entertainment; and there's a pool for post-drive plunges.
Deteema's eight safari tents are simple in style, with green canvas walls and enough room to comfortably accommodate twin or double beds, and an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and hot-and-cold running showers. Like the main area, the tents are raised on large wooden decks with views of the Deteema Springs.
You'll feel like a pioneering explorer when setting out from Deteema, especially on foot safaris. And that's part of this area's attraction... Walking safaris provide both excellent up-close viewing of big game and a more nuanced take on the little things that underpin this ecosystem. Drives open the landscape, which is vast and varied, and a treasure trove of wildlife big and small, including plentiful birds. Waterholes play a key role in game viewing, especially in the dry season.
Deteema Springs is owned by Machaba Safaris which deeply values the communities in Botswana and Zimbabwe, and feeds back into them through education, empowerment, and conservation initiatives. They support local schools and programs while working with communities to protect fragile ecosystems and promote human-wildlife coexistence. Addressing infrastructure needs, they provide essentials like water and sustainable gardens. Visitors can contribute through donations, volunteering, or simply by choosing Machaba Safaris for their safari experience.
