Ecolodge Ravoraha

With its palm-thatched roof and rustic decor, the light and breezy interior has a distinct Swiss Family Robinson appeal. It's studded with seafaring artefacts, from green-glass buoy lanterns and model sailing ships to nautical maps. White-cushioned cane sofas offer plenty of seating. On the patio are several sets of colourful tables and chairs where most meals are served. Palm-thatched pergolas dotted throughout the meandering, overgrown garden are furnished with bright mattresses for full-day lounging, and there's a private massage room.

Ecolodge Ravoraha's gorgeous bungalows are spacious and bright, with fabric-draped beds fit for sultans. Standard bungalows sleep two, with en-suite facilities and a private terrace. Family bungalows sleep up to seven in their split-level open-plan rooms, with a shared bathroom, lounge and terrace. There are also more economic options for travellers who don't mind sharing. Most luxurious is the toes-in-the-sand Gold Chamber, with its king-sized bed; and most romantic is the treehouse room perched above the edge of the beach.

There's loads to do. Ocean-based activities include whale safaris, reef diving, kite-surfing, boat trips and fishing excursions. On land, try quad-biking and hiking, or drive the length of the island (all 60 kilometres of it). All activities can be arranged at the lodge, which has a great relationship with the community and will guide you sensitively.
