At the end of a path lined with blooming flowers, the main lodge is a chalet-style structure that's home to a lobby and fire-lit lounge. Also here is the glass-walled restaurant that serves farm-to-table dishes made with rainbow trout from the outdoor ponds and fresh ingredients from the organic greenhouse. In the evenings, visit the cosy Toro Bohemio Bar for a cocktail or glass of wine, or even one of the home brews! Surrounded by trees, the mostly open-air yoga deck and spa offers treatments using a delicious medley of herbs and fruits.
Dotted along the hillside, there is a variety of suites and villas, all of which enjoy equally dreamy views of the cloud forest, river and mountains. The interiors are unpretentious with stream-lined wooden detailing, pillow-top beds and a supply of Cafe Britt coffee. The highlight is undoubtedly the alfresco stone hot tub, kept completely private by a wall of bamboo reed - a post-hike soak is perfection. The two or three-bedroom villas have additional spacious living and dining areas, while the riverside villa boasts two whirlpool hot tubs and kitchenette.
Explore the reserve on scenic hikes (they range in length and difficulty), spotting all manner of wild and wonderful animals and birds. The shy quetzal is always a highlight, as is a visit the hummingbird garden. Horse rides and mountain biking trips are also available, or opt for the truly adventurous route with a day of ziplining and rappelling down waterfalls. Otherwise, take a different tack entirely with a rum, coffee or wine tasting afternoon, or a Costa Rican cooking class. Oh, and leave time for a thrilling night walk too.
