Ellerman House is unlike any other hotel in the city – it may be super-luxurious, but it makes you feel right at home the minute you check in. And that's a gift. The dining room has a French ambience, the food is superb (don't miss afternoon tea) and there are comfortable seating areas from which to enjoy the view. Despite the building's mountainside location, the terraced gardens are expansive and lovely. There is a large pool, a private art collection and a spa.
There are just 13 rooms (all but two with sea views) and two villas in the grounds, so you can expect a peaceful stay. Each room is completely different in character, but all are huge, furnished in subtle earthy tones, combine contemporary finishes with antique pieces and have bedding of the best quality. The villas have lounges and dining areas.
Pick up an iPad at reception and take a self-guided tour through the extensive collection of South African art or enlist the help of the resident art guide for a full tour. Mornings call for a walk up Lion’s Head to enjoy the views over the city and when the temperature rises, head down to Clifton's pristine beaches and cool off in the ever-brisk Atlantic Ocean. Or simply ease into your sun lounger and gaze at the staggering vista, cocktail in hand.
