Etosha Mountain Lodge

Built in a classic Namibian style with soaring thatched roofs and timber frameworks, the main lapa area is rustic and cosy. There's an indoor fireplace for chilly winter evenings as well as a well-stocked bar where sundowners are practically mandatory. The dining area spills out onto a wooden deck where meals are served overlooking the reserve, and there's a wine cellar for those who appreciate a good South African vintage. A pool provides respite from the African heat.

Spread across the hillside to maximise those jaw-dropping 180-degree views, the nine air-conditioned chalets are unpretentious and very generously. Slate floors keep things cool, whilst high thatched ceilings and enormous windows frame the drama outside. Ensuite bathrooms have both walk-in showers and large bathtubs. The family suite goes one better with its own private plunge pool on the veranda, perfect for keeping youngsters entertained.

Morning and afternoon game drives are the main event, led by guides who know every waterhole, kopje and game trail. The reserve's elephants have helpfully demolished sections of the boundary fence with Etosha National Park, so wildlife moves freely between the two areas, meaning you get national park-quality viewing minus the vehicles. Head out a night to see a completely different cast of characters, too! During the day, rhino tracking on foot gets the adrenaline pumping, whilst the waterhole right in front of camp provides lazy afternoon entertainment. Birders will be kept busy too – the reserve is a haven for raptors and vultures.
