The present owners, who bought Fairview Homestead in 1994, have managed to maintain the authenticity of the original structure delightfully. Georgian architecture, with its classical style, pleasing symmetry, high-ceilinged interiors and deep windows is really pleasing. The house rises beautifully above the gardens... The breakfasts are full and delicious, there's plenty to see in the garden, and you'll enjoy cooling off in the pool after a day spent investigating the surroundings.
There are just five high-ceilinged rooms decorated with antiques and lovely artwork, with no compromise in comfort – expect a large bed, fine linens and gorgeous bathroom. Two rooms have a working fireplace (nights can get chilly); another has French doors opening to a lavender garden; yet another has a small private patio and garden with its own braai.
George itself is a quiet city that offers easy access to the Garden Route's attractions. It's just eight kilometres to the nearest beach, a 50-minute drive to Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay (shark cage diving anyone?) and Knysna, and there are numerous golf courses. The Garden Route Botanical Garden is perfect for a day's hike. Pack a picnic and tramp the paths, noting the birds and taking pictures as you go. (And there's a tea garden if you're gasping for a coffee!)
