Despite its size, Fig Tree feels like a discreet hideaway tucked inside the old-growth forest. It doesn't seem possible that it has two bars, a large dining room, a second open-air dining area, and a treehouse coffee deck. There's certainly ample room to sprawl (you'll enjoy between-safari dips in the lovely swimming pool, with sun loungers), and all the service you need supplied by well-dressed waiters. The atmosphere may seem a bit formal, but you're assured hospitality of the highest order.
Winding along the riverbank are a total of 48 tents (accessed with a guide). The bulk of the accommodation is in Meru-style tents, each with a furnished front porch and large interior space. All have the glamorous air of those old-style safaris, with quality furnishings and en-suite bathrooms. There are 32 garden lodge rooms with solid walls as well. Electricity is generator-powered and available most of the day and night (although hot water can be intermittent).
Game drives in the Mara will keep you close to the action and Africa's major mammals – leopard, cheetah, lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, giraffe and, of course, huge numbers of zebra and wildebeest. Birding is excellent too. Fig Tree arranges hot-air balloon rides and post-flight champagne breakfast (no need to drive to an off-site operator). If they're offered, take a night drive or walking safari – such experiences offer a rare glimpse into often unseen dimensions of the bush.
