The vast main guest area has an elegant dining room where lavish dinners are served, with silverware, fine porcelain and cut crystal glasses echoing the way Finch Hatton himself used to conduct his safaris. Breakfast and lunch are served on the terrace overlooking the hippo pool, with Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Under cool thatch, the comfortable lounge and bar open out to a huge infinity pool. The wellness centre offers spa treatments, yoga and gym facilities.
Fourteen double or twin tents, two suites with two bedrooms and a lounge, and the superb Finch Hatton Suite, with its own pool and butler service, are well spaced on either side of the main area in a flowing line along the water’s edge. Decor is lavish without being over the top, and each is the last word in colonial luxury, with indoor and outdoor showers, freestanding copper bathtubs and private viewing decks overlooking the hippo pools.
Tsavo National Park West is a fascinating landscape of ancient lava flows, natural springs, lush forests and wide open plains, and game drives and guided walks produce superb wildlife encounters. Game is abundant and the birdlife is nothing short of spectacular. Take a cultural visit to local Maasai communities. A children's programme caters for younger guests while parents enjoy a spa treatment, yoga session, work out in the gym or simply relax beside the swimming pool.
