About Flatdogs Camp

Down-to-earth comfort and excellent game viewing at this friendly and relaxed river camp.
Mention Flatdogs to anyone who knows Zambia well and they will nod appreciatively and tell you it’s a Luangwa institution… and they wouldn’t be wrong. Once known for camping, Flatdogs is now a comfortable and reasonably-priced lodge set in a beautiful location on the banks of the Luangwa. With a swimming pool, lots of shady trees to relax under and a fantastic a la carte restaurant, there is plenty to keep you busy in between the excellent game drives in the Mfuwe area of the park.

Property details

The property

Flatdogs has the friendly and relaxed camp atmosphere down to a T and the lively bar and restaurant areas are at the heart of the camp. The thatched, open-sided structures are built around a shady courtyard (shared by the resident monkeys) and the décor is bright and fun with a large ‘flatdog’ hanging above the bar. Tables are dotted around the restaurant and gardens, allowing you to be as private as you wish.

The rooms

There is something to suit everyone at Flatdogs and accommodation ranges from 5 well-appointed tents along the river, to 3 airy chalets with 1 or 2 bedrooms (1 family chalet is also available) and 2 private ‘tree houses’ – the classic and relaxed Jackalberry House and the new Croc Nest, a stylish pad with private plunge pool and stunning views. All rooms have private bathrooms and small seating areas and the chalets also have well-equipped kitchens for a little more freedom at meal times.

Activities

There are lots of options for packages at Flatdogs but activities focus on game drives and walking safaris and with enough notice, either can be added to your itinerary for a small cost if not already included. The camp is only a 5 minute drive from the park gate which takes you straight into the heart of prime game viewing territory and guaranteed fantastic sightings even with a few other vehicles around.

What you'll love

What you'll love

The combination of a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful but simple rooms, and wildlife on your doorstep makes this one of the best (and most affordable) options in the South Luangwa area.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

If you're with friends or kids have a look at the Crocodile Nest, a separate private tented 'house', for a more exclusive option.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The camp is just outside the park in an area that can get busy, but it has the huge advantage of being the closest camp to the park gate so you'll always be first in line for the best wildlife-watching.
