About Fothergill

A family-friendly camp in a private concession on the shores of Lake Kariba.
Named after the leader of Operation Noah, the bold rescue mission that relocated over 6,000 animals after the construction of Kariba Dam, Fothergill is instilled with a passion for protecting Zimbabwe's wild spaces and its inhabitants. Set amongst lush trees on the shores of Lake Kariba, the camp is well-positioned for fantastic water and land safaris led by world-class guides. Fothergill is 95% solar-powered and their entire team is trained in-house, which ensures superb service. During certain months, Fothergill becomes an island, but its private concession welcomes huge herds of elephant and buffalo, and an incredible variety of birdlife all year round.

Property details

The property

Beneath stretched white canvas, the camp has two separate lounge and dining areas (one for the Lake Suites and one for Little Fothergill), decorated in colours that draw from nature - deep blue, lily-pink, burnt orange. The large decks are dotted with shady umbrellas, and each area has its own pool. The food at Fothergill is fantastic! The chef is Zimbabwean-born and bred and his specialities include twice-baked cheese soufflé and a delicious mango panna cotta. You'll start the day with a full English breakfast, before a lunch of fresh salads, and then a three-course dinner in the evening. Each is served in a different location around camp, or out in the bush for dining with a difference.

The rooms

Fothergill is split into two 'camps.' The Lake Suites comprises five tented suites, two of which are family tents, whilst Little Fothergill comprises three suites and can be booked exclusively or as part of the Lake Suites if you need more space. Decorated in neutral, earthy tones, all tents have large and inviting four-poster beds, small sitting areas, plenty of closet space and roll-up 'walls' to let in the view. The bathrooms have large rainfall showers (some outdoor), double basins and a few of the tents boast an outdoor tub too. Enjoy an armchair safari from the veranda or gaze at the skies from your private pool.

Activities

Fothergill offers a diverse and wonderful array of activities to enjoy Lake Kariba and the surrounding Matusadona National Park, from boat cruises and catch-and-release fishing to game drives and walking safaris. Along the way, keep your binoculars (they're provided by Fothergill) at the ready to spy massive herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra and impalas, as well as lion, and hippo and crocodile in the water. The open vehicles are built for total comfort with customisable seating, padded roll bars and charging points. The birdlife is also spectacular with over 240 species in the area. There's also a small gym in camp.
