About Gorah Elephant Camp

An elegant, colonial-style camp with plenty of creature comforts.
Addo probably isn’t the first place that springs to mind if you’re looking for a back-to-nature experience mixed with a bit of five-star swank, but Gorah Elephant Camp is changing all that. Set in a 5,000 acre private concession within the park, the camp is an elegant haven of imperial splendour, and nature lovers will get their fix from the ostrich strutting across the glorious plains and leopard slinking in the shadows. And then there’s the elephants. The park is said to be home to the highest concentration of the majestic pachyderms on the planet and at Gorah, you don’t even need to leave the lodge to see them in all their glory.

Property details

The property

Recently restored and reminiscent of the safari days of yester-year, main Gorah House is resplendent with antique oils, brass lanterns and the piece de resistance, a grand stone fireplace. Take tea in the cosy sitting room under portraits of moustachioed imperials or sip a cool G&T from a crystal glass on the veranda and gaze at the stunning vistas ahead. Outside, there’s a large, brilliantly blue swimming pool with plenty of lounging space and a fantastic view of the waterhole.

The rooms

Raised walkways lead to 11 beautifully-crafted tents, each one with the same fabulous view of the Addo plains (complete with elephants of course). Cool, creamy colour schemes, private verandas with wicker chairs and colossal four-poster beds are totally colonial-chic but the bathrooms might make you forget you’re even on safari with super-strong rain showers and shiny twin sinks. There’s no electricity here so get ready to brush your teeth by candlelight and read by lantern. Totally charming.

Activities

As well as the impressive number of elephants, Addo is also home to buffalo, leopard, lion, rhino, lots of herbivores and antelope and even giant tortoise! Track them down on twice daily game drives in 4x4 Landcruisers, or even on foot or horseback if you’re feeling particularly active. And if a bit of relaxation is on the cards then that’s fine too – get stuck into a good book, dip into the pool or relax on the veranda (and remember your camera).

Being spoiled rotten – think mini bottles of Amarula after dinner, elephant-shaped chocolates at turn down, and scrummy Charlotte Rhys toiletries to name a few of the treats in store...
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

You don’t need to move far from camp to wildlife-watch here and a siesta by the waterhole, G&T in hand and elephants strolling past, might be the most perfect afternoon you’ll ever have.
Something to think about

Something to think about

None of the rooms have any electrical appliances so don’t expect any mini-fridges or coffee machines. The main area does, however, have everything you’ll need in that department.
