Grumeti River Camp

Mosaic-inlaid concrete paths link the nature-inspired terracotta-coloured buildings that house a cool and comfortable lounge with colourful armchairs and wall hangings, a wide, open-sided restaurant and a quirky bar tower – excellent for sundowners while watching birds in action and the resident hippos cavorting in the river. There are wide verandas in front of each building, with plenty of places to relax, and a swimming pool surrounded by deck chairs cushioned in a regal purple.

Curved along the riverbank flanking the main area are 10 spacious tented rooms sheltering beneath woven thatch roofs. Set on mosaic-encrusted concrete plinths, each tent offers a huge net-draped bed, bright linens, mesh windows, ceiling fan, and an en-suite lavatory and private outdoor shower. Some suites face the river, others the bush (check when booking). There's a veranda for relaxing or working out with the contents of your private "gym in a bag" – a mat, weights and skipping rope.

The camp's riverside location ensures prime game viewing and stunning river views alike. Take a game drive across the famous Serengeti plains (look out for incredible vulture action), or marvel at the views from a hot-air balloon. Visit between late May and July for the chance to see the Great Migration pass through, but if you miss it, this part of the Serengeti supports a real richness of species year-round – enough to create memories to last a lifetime.
