Occupying a portion of one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots, the 7,400-hectare Mkambati Nature Reserve throws every expectation out of the window... with style! With a prime position on South Africa's Wild Coast, GweGwe Beach Lodge is the kind of place where you can soak up every ounce of nature. That could mean scanning the waves for whales from your private deck or kayaking along tranquil tributaries, stopping for a dip beneath one of over 21 waterfalls. With just 9 suites in total, it'll feel like you have this slice of wilderness all to yourselves – and your guide will craft the experience entirely to suit you

Overlooking the indigo Indian Ocean, the main lodge consists of a fire-warmed lounge, dining area with an open-plan kitchen, bar and wine cellar. The laidback 'beach chic' style - think handmade grass lampshades, splashes of turquoise, and lots of pale woods - only aids relaxation further. When the weather allows, meals are served on the expansive deck, be it made-to-order breakfasts or divine seafood dinners, accompanied by fine South African wines. Down a sandy path, the spa offers standout massages and two secluded hot tubs for maximum bliss.
With reed-like ceilings and rammed earth-inspired walls, there's something wonderfully rustic (and eco-conscious) about GweGwe's suites – and yet, you couldn't be more comfortable. Each one has super King-sized beds (set up as twin three-quarter beds on request), a hot drinks station and minibar, and an open-plan bathroom with double vanities, indoor and outdoor showers, and a bath with a sensational sea view. The family suites have two separate bedrooms and en-suites. All open onto a private deck with a plunge pool, too.
The real question is, 'What can't you do at GweGwe?' From kayaking to mountain biking, swimming, snorkelling, SUPing and hiking, there's almost endless ways to explore this beautiful part of the world. The guides have a superb knowledge of the area and are always ready for an adventure, be it exploring the myriad rockpools for colourful creatures or rappelling down waterfalls. Otherwise, take things a little easier with a spot of land-based whale watching - or head to the beach and take it from there...
There is an impressive list of things to do at GweGwe, whether you're into on-land activities or sea-going expeditions.
Make the most of the adjacent Pondoland Marine Protected Area by visiting between June and July, when the annual Sardine Run swims by.
Guests are encouraged to digitally detox at GweGwe – devices are highly discouraged in shared spaces and spotty wifi makes it easy to stay offline.
GweGwe Beach Lodge is owned by Natural Selection which is dedicated to conservation, partnering with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect and expand conservation areas. They build eco-friendly camps that blend into the environment and aim to inform guests about Africa's wildlife challenges and successes, hoping to inspire further positive action for wildlife conservation. A contribution of $27,50 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.

Take the road less travelled to this rural coastline that few visitors ever get to discover.
