About Halekulani Okinawa

A century of Hawaiian hospitality transplanted to one of Japan's longest-living islands.

On the west coast of Okinawa's Main Island, where the East China Sea shows off its best turquoise, this is the first Halekulani to open beyond Hawaii (the Waikiki original has been going since 1917). It runs along a mile of coastline inside the Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park, a short hop from the sea-cliff drama of Cape Manzamo. The look is pale and calm, all 'seven shades of white' chosen to throw the blues and greens outside into clarity. Everything carries a noted polish, plus a genuine longevity story: Onna sits in one of the world's original Blue Zones. Aloha, Ryukyu-style.

Property details

The property

Spread across 32 landscaped acres, the resort keeps things bright and airy, the Champalimaud-designed interiors leading your eye straight to the water. The headline act is the Orchid Pool, its cattleya bloom picked out in roughly 1.5 million mosaic tiles. SpaHalekulani pairs ancient Ryukyu folk remedies with Hawaiian treatments and an onsen fed by natural hot spring. Four restaurants cover all the bases, from Michelin-starred SHIROUX to steak-and-wine at Kingdom. And the food is very good.

The rooms

All 360 rooms face the sea, come in at 50 square metres minimum, and have a private terrace, so there's genuinely no losing out. Above the standard rooms sit 47 suites and five villas, the latter topped with traditional Okinawan red roof tiles and kitted out with a private heated pool and their own onsen. Bathrooms are marble with a deep soaking tub angled at the horizon and full-size Rōzu aromatherapy products.

Activities

Days here bend towards the water. Snorkel the reef straight off the private beach, try stand-up paddleboarding, or book a charter cruise through the concierge. Landlubbers can wade the freshwater canyons of the Yanbaru rainforest up north, or have a go at Goju-ryu karate (Okinawa is its birthplace). Cape Manzamo and its elephant-trunk cliff are minutes away, and the superb Churaumi Aquarium rewards the drive further up the coast. If you're the philosophical sort, October brings the island's only Blue Zones longevity retreat.
Why we love it

Why we love it

The sunset. West-facing terraces, the Ocean Terrace Pool and Bar SPECTRA are all angled at the nightly orange-and-violet show, best watched with an Okinawan-inspired cocktail in hand.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

The two wings pull in different directions, so choose deliberately. The Sunset Wing catches that famous west light and the evening colour; the Beachfront Wing has the better outright sea view. Best to pick your priority.

Something to think about

Something to think about

For all the family-friendliness, most of the real swimming water is for 16 and over. Families with little ones end up concentrated around the Orchid Pool and Kids Pool, which fill up fast in peak season.
