About Hemingways Watamu

Big fish, big names and tall stories on Kenya's tropical coast
Two hours’ drive north of Mombassa on Kenya's central coast, the newly renovated Hemingways Watamu is a boutique beach hotel that combines the old-time charm of a fisherman's paradise, with a fresh injection of luxury. Its hunting- and fishing-loving patron saint, the eponymous Ernest Hemingway, is said to have visited in search of some big game fishing, but allegedly never left the bar! Take this anecdote as an allegory - feel free to be as busy or static as you like. From sailing, deep-sea fishing and diving, to golfing and sunset cruising, there is plenty to keep you entertained, but the sandy beaches and open-plan grounds with two swimming pools are there for lazing and lingering. Whatever your aim, Hemingways Watamu is a gem.

Property details

The property

Recently overhauled, Hemingways is looking especially modern and chic after 30 years of operation. The main area of the boutique hotel has been redesigned and feels light, airy and spacious, and the botanical swimming pool is a special touch, as is the waterfall outside the main restaurant. Sit inside in the dining room or outside beneath the shady veranda overlooking the sea, and munch on the catch of the day - sashimi-ed, grilled, roasted or steamed, the chef is at your service!

The rooms

Each of the 39 rooms has an ocean view and is just a short walk to the beach. Rooms range from superior to executive, but all have spacious ensuite bathrooms with showers, air-con and mini-fridges. Large windows and shady patios keep things cool throughout the day, and the decor is modern and relaxing - think handcrafted wood furniture, colourful kikoy bedspreads and crisp, white walls. Lovely.

Activities

From deep-sea fishing and kite surfing to snorkelling and sunset cruising, the ocean offers a host of things to do! Scuba diving is excellent and snorkelling can be done straight off beach - the hotel even offers complimentary equipment. Game fishing, historically the agenda for most guests, remains a very professional, internationally recognised operation with four boats ranging from 33 to 54 feet, all fully equipped. The fishing season starts in July and reaches its peak tourist season from October to November and the big-billed fish (marlin and sailfish) can be caught from November through April.
