Property details

The property

With polished wooden floors, tatami mats and low lighting, the central area of the hotel has a warm atmosphere. At meal times, an array of local delicacies is offered including Hida beef and fresh river fish. Served in a private Sanmachi Komichi room at your preferred time, the meals are an experience in themselves and your host will make sure you know exactly what everything is. The piece de resistance is, of course, the onsen pools, which are open until the late evening and enjoy splendid mountain vistas. If you're in need of extra pampering, head to the spa for a massage.

The rooms

There is a selection of rooms either featuring a Western-style bed or futon, as well as tatami mats, cedar wood details, intricate scroll artwork and a traditional low sitting area. Shoji paper screens can be slid aside to reveal a beautiful view of the gardens and, in some rooms, a private onsen to enjoy. Other handy amenities include wifi, aircon, a TV, safe and a minibar. Filled with amber light, the rooms feel warm and homely.

Activities

Take in the scenery of Takayama as you hike along mountain trails or cycle into town. The old town provides a fascinating insight into Japan of old, as does the San-machi Suji district and the Hida No Stato Folk Village, an open-air museum where you can see how ancient crafts are preserved. The Miyagawa Morning Market is also a firm favourite, where you can sample regional fishes and pick up handmade items. You can also pay a visit to the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition to admire the elaborate creations.
