About Hosteria La Andaluza

In a simply idyllic setting, the hotel is charming and historic with sensational vistas.
Along the enticingly-named Avenue of Volcanoes, the town of Riobamba occupies the southern slopes of Chimborazo - Ecuador's highest mountain - placing it 3,320 metres closer to the stars than the rest of the world. Located just outside the town and set in pretty, grassy gardens, the Hosteria La Andaluza evokes a deep sense of history, its interiors adorned with antique musical instruments and Turkish tapestries. The endless blue skies and paramo highlands are persuasion enough to spend almost every moment outdoors, riding horseback down alpine trails, trekking to secluded crater lakes and spotting llamas in the wild. When you're all adventured out, sip on a glass of red from the cellar and watch the sunset.

Property details

The property

With its wooden, beamed ceilings, terracotta floors and adobe walls, Hosteria La Andaluza is traditional down to a tee. The main restaurant, El Stablo, is no exception with its large stained windows, leather, chairs and smoking fireplace. Their signature dishes are delicious and locally-inspired, while the Cafeteria also offers a selection Ecuadorian coffee, organic, herbal teas and tasty French fare. Any one for a three-cheese fondue? Head to the cosy El Portal bar for a drink and an evening of karaoke.

The rooms

Spread across four wings, the rooms enjoy a variety of views from the well-kept, hummingbird-filled gardens to the striking figure of Chimborazo. With pale peach or yellow walls, each room is furnished with antiques (grand, carved chests, writing desk and fine tables) and large, pillow-soft beds. All have a private en-suite and some enjoy a large Jacuzzi bathtub with views over the landscape. The Presidential Suite has a quaint sitting area with scarlet rugs, a 'candle-lit' chandelier and fireplace.

Activities

In this neck of the woods, there's adventure galore. Discover the beauty of the region on treks into the mountains; you could even brave the summit of Chimborazo - or the more manageable half-way point. Cycle through forests and along the scenic canyon, boat across the Laguna de Colta, or hop on the 'Ice Train' - and stop at Ecuador's highest station along the way. Riobamba is filled with history, which you'll encounter on strolls through its museums and cathedrals. Then, pick up handmade souvenirs at the Feria Artesanal.

Entered via an Andalusian patio, the spa was designed like a traditional sanctuary with ornate, stained-glass windows and Persian rugs. You'll be suitably pampered with Thai massages and dips in the spring water pools.

The views vary from room to room, so be sure to ask if you've got your eye on a volcano-facing suite.

Bugs may get into the rooms and with no mosquito nets, make sure you have insect repellant with you.
