Lined with fragrant cypress, the hotel's interiors are peaceful and understated, starting with the lobby where you can buy Shinshu specialties. There is a selection of open-air and indoor onsens; the latter are perfectly positioned beside vast windows make the most of the view - and there's a sauna too. The hotel serves an array of Kiso-style cuisine using fresh local ingredients including Shinshu Apple Wagyu beef and Shinano Snow Trout, best enjoyed with handmade soba noodles. Look out for evenings when they prepare a special flame-grilled course!
The hotel has a choice of Japanese-style and western rooms, all located on the third floor. All have their own bathroom (complete with a heated toilet seat!), sitting area and balcony with astounding views of the surrounding canopy. The rooms either have twin beds or tatami mat floors with futons, and beautiful walls of high-quality wood - the finishing touch to a minimalist, clean style without a hint of clutter.
One of the highlights at Hotel Fukinomori is to enjoy a soak in one of the steaming onsen baths, which are kept separate for men and women. The Kiso Valley is also blessed with stunning scenic trails, which guests can explore on foot or by bicycle. One of the most famous routes is the Nakasendo Trail (or an 8 kilometre segment of the full route), which winds through tranquil forests and traditional villages, including the beautifully-restored inns of Tsumago.
A town frozen in time, Tsumago is a charming stop along Japan's historic Nakasendo route.
