Hotel Tugu was built to preserve Indonesia's lesser-known cultures and this comes through in every detail. The lobby stands beneath a 150-year-old ceremonial hall, which was transported piece by piece from a village in central Bali. The hotel has a variety of dining options, from authentic island cuisine served on traditional, candlelit mats on the floor to robata-style dishes enjoyed amongst antique Chinese paintings. Grab a drink at the Ji Terrace with splendid ocean views and Deejayed beats, or visit the photogenic lobby bar, adorned with the works of Le Mayeur de Merpres.
The hotel has a collection of suites and villas, most of which are modelled on authentic Javanese wooden houses. They each have a unique style and inspiration, from the stained-glass windows and hand-hammered tin bath in the Rejang Suite to the Puri Le Mayeur Villa, which celebrates the love of this famous Belgian artist and his muse, dancer Ni Polok. Amenities range from room to room but all have huge canopy beds draped in flowing white curtains, while some rooms have their own plunge pool too.
From Hotel Tugu, it's very easy to reach most of Canggu on foot: explore the beachfront, visit one of Bali's holiest temples, Besakih, or simply learn from the local people who are always eager to share the culture of the island with visitors. You can also wander through Tenganan, famous for its double ikat weaving style, as well book horseback rides along the beach and cycling tours through the rice paddies.
Meet Canggu, the chic beach hotspot with sleek restaurants and plenty of vibe.
