The main lodge is made of thatch and stone - a large feature on the horizon, but the silhouette of the thatch mirrors a mountain range in the distance, making it easier on the eye than one would expect. Partly built into a granite outcrop, the expansive, open-sided 'lapa' overlooks a small waterhole, with the Huab River bed to one side. A large Rhodesian teak communal dining table sits at its heart. Meanwhile, just a stone's throw from the lodge are the thermal baths, with naturally hot water that bubbles from the earth, making for the perfect day of relaxation.
Huab might not have the most modern of fittings and decorative accents, but that doesn't stop it from exuding an unpretentious charm with its handmade, chunky wooden furniture and decorative local materials. Cool, slate floors, high thatched ceilings and large outdoor verandahs are standard features throughout the eight bungalows scattered along the dune slope, each with views over the valley. They all have two king-size beds, an ensuite toilet, two hand basins and a shower with a view.
The Huab Valley might not be teeming with desert elephants as one would imagine in years past, but the value of this camp lies in its quiet and reflective charm. Expect to come across Hartman's mountain zebra, giraffe, antelope and the odd cheetah and - if you're lucky - occasional desert elephant on your daily game drive. Marvel at the exquisite rock formations and the 210 bird species found in this area. There is also an onsite hot spring, as well as a swimming pool to cool down if need be.
