About Huab Under Canvas

This is Damaraland, home to rare desert-adapted black rhino and elephants.
Sheltering beneath a mopane grove on the banks of a tributary of the Huab River – one of the Namibia's most important corridors for desert-adapted elephants and rhinos – lies Huab Under Canvas. This is Namibia at its rawest, far off the beaten track and a great place to take in the desert. The semi-mobile camp operates between April and November, and offers excellent guiding, eight canvas tents raised on mobile platforms, comfortably furnishings and very good food. You'll enjoy the seclusion and the freedom to explore one of Damaraland’s most interesting ecosystems. And the Twyfelfontein petroglyphs are nearby.

Property details

The property

Wooden walkways link the canvas tents to the communal area, where you'll find comfortable sofas and armchairs just waiting to embrace you at the end of a day in the desert. The large deck provides breathtaking views, the perfect place for sundowners and watching the views. The meals are freshly prepared and delicious, and often include local ingredients. Set around a fire pit are sunloungers that are just the ticket for nightcaps and gazing at the gigantic star-studded sky.

The rooms

Wooden floors, roll-up doorways and a canvas roof make this a true safari experience, albeit a rather comfortable one, with twin beds, bedside tables, an armoire and an en-suite bathroom with fresh towels and toiletries providing the creature comforts. There are eight tents in all, and the camp is booked exclusively. In winter, extra blankets and hot-water bottles keep the cold at bay – grab them and head out to your private patio to snuggle up and enjoy the view.

Activities

The number-one activity at Huab Under Canvas is without doubt rhino tracking. Follow the camp's special "Rhino Rangers" as they help to protect and track the elusive beasts. Have cameras at the ready as the creatures can disappear in a flash. Nature walks, game drives in search of intriguing desert elephants, visits to the petroglyphs at Twyfelfontein and to interact with the local Himba people are all on the menu. So order up and enjoy Namibia's unique, and vast, beauty.
