The restaurant and large outdoor terrace forms the heart of Isalo Ranch. Both overlook a large swimming pool, and those breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and rock formations. Built in traditional Malagasy style, the restaurant offers a choice of local and international dishes, and often plays host to performances by local dancers and musicians. Surrounded by indigenous gardens, the ranch really is an oasis in the heart of the desert.
Isalo has twenty bungalows, each located in a tranquil forested area and painted in terracotta tones and finished with traditional thatched roofs. Interiors are simple but adequate, and characterised by colourful fabrics and art works by local artists. All come with bathtubs, hot water, mosquito nets and private terraces, and are powered by solar power. WiFI is available at the reception area.
The main attraction in the area is Isalo National Park, a granite massif with beautiful landscapes and a good population of lemur species, including Verraux’s sifakas, brown and ring-tail lemurs. Hikes to the beautiful natural pools can also be arranged - remember your swimmers! - as can cycling or 4x4 trips, and guided tours through the canyons to the lemurs and chameleons. 80km south of Isalo Ranch is the Zobitse Vohibasia National Park, which is a dry forest filled with baobabs, orchids, lemurs and endemic bird species.
