The guesthouse is part of the family's handsomely restored home, set within a beautiful aloe garden after which it is named. Sheltering beneath shady almond trees is a lovely courtyard patio, and there's a fabulous roof-top terrace overlooking the town and the sea. Breakfast is served in the courtyard or on the roof, and there are some great restaurants nearby for lunch and dinner. Relax in the comfortable patio lounge or plunge into the swimming pool secluded among the aloes.
The comfortable accommodation consists of a double en-suite bedroom and a larger suite which share a balcony, and an apartment with a fully equipped kitchenette, a first-floor bedroom and a double sleeper couch – great for families. The apartment also has its own lounge and a private balcony with a hammock. Interiors throughout are simple and uncluttered, with quirky vintage artefacts collected over the years, and plenty of space. All have mosquito nets and air conditioning.
A highlight here is that the guesthouse has its own yacht, which opens up a world of possibilities for exploring the waters around the island and further afield. Snorkelling and fishing trips are offered, with longer cruises to the surrounding islands and mainland Mozambique. The town itself is fascinating – guided bicycle tours are a great way to get a feel of the island, with its historic monuments, lively street markets, and restaurants and bars within easy reach.
Every step of the journey is worth it when you arrive in this rugged region, packed full of culture.
