The double-storey thatched main area lies on the riverbank, with a few stairs leading to the first level, where you'll find the restaurant and bar with cool slate floors and rustic wooden chairs and tables. The upstairs loft has plenty of wicker furniture and superb views over the river. There's also a decent library, so grab a book and find a spot to chill between activities. On the river's edge is a lovely pool with sunloungers, and a shady patio.
There are six thatched stone rondavels (round huts), each with its own wooden veranda facing the river. Inside, stone floors help to keep things comfortably cool, double beds are draped with mosquito nets, walk-in wardrobes offer plenty of storage, and the en-suite bathroom has a shower, basin and toilet. The double-storey family unit has three separate suites and a shared deck. The decor throughout is generally quite rustic and simple, but it works well to create a lovely homely feel.
First priority is the river – morning and evening cruises provide decent wildlife viewing of game, from elephants and antelope to the omnipresent hippos and crocs, and plenty of birds. The Zambezi offers some of the most challenging freshwater fishing in southern Africa, and is also perfect to explore in a canoe – an experience both peaceful and exhilarating.
