About Karen Blixen Coffee Garden & Cottages

Take it easy at this long-standing estate that sits pretty in the charming suburb of Karen
History, refined style and a peaceful atmosphere personify the Karen Blixen Cottages, built around the farmhouse that once belonged to the Blixen family. Sitting within one of the oldest landscaped gardens in Kenya, the estate provides a respite from the bustle of Nairobi, perfect to catch your breath before a safari or wind-down at the end of your trip. There are multiple, beautifully-designed spaces where you can really relax, but the estate is also within easy reach of Karen's many highlights. Learn about conservation efforts at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or endangered giraffe centre, or get to know the artisans at the local shops (and pick up a few souvenirs).

Property details

The property

The estate boasts a number of dining spots including the elegant Babette or Garden Restaurant, which meet in The Atrium - a grand structure with stained-glass walls. At the heated pool you'll find Hatton's Lounge & Restaurant. Designed with elegant, dark stone and glass walls, fine art pieces and a fireplace, it offers a la carte or buffet meals, all prepared with ingredients from local farms and served inside or in the shaded courtyard. If you're in need of some pampering, the spa awaits...

The rooms

Set along pathways winding through the garden, there are 16 rooms, a trio of two-bedroom cottages and a honeymoon suite. The design captures the estate's history with wide archways, high, beamed ceilings and a fireplace (or two) to light on chilly evenings. Four-poster beds are topped with cream and beige linens, and draped in netting, while artwork showcasing the flora and fauna of Kenya lines the walls. The bathrooms are spacious, with double basins and rainfall showers. All cottages enjoy a private veranda but the family options have a much larger lounge area.

Activities

The estate is very close to the highlights of Karen, including the Karen Blixen Museum and Kazuri Bead Factory, which sells ceramic beads, pottery and leather items handmade by over 300 local women. If this is up your alley, make sure to also pay a visit to MATBRONZE, which produces bronzes using the 'lost wax' process, and admire the works at Utamaduni Craft Centre. It's an easy drive to David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Rothschild giraffe sanctuary, where you can hand-feed these endangered 'tall horses' - just make sure to book both in advance.
