The double-storey thatched communal area is perfectly positioned for you to observe the game that moves constantly between the Katuma River and Katisunga Plains. Upstairs, the lounge maximises the view; downstairs are a small bar, several sitting areas with comfy leather seating, and a cosy dining area. Delicately woven rugs and red carpets add a touch of class. In front of the lounge, an open-air fire pit offers a 180-degree view of the plains.
Katavi Camp has eight spacious Meru-style tents built on raised wooden decks, under thatched roofs, three of which have plunge pools. Each has a large shaded veranda with two wooden armchairs and a hammock to make the most of the breeze. Inside, the mesh windows on the front and sides create a light, airy feel, especially welcome during the warmer months. There's a writing desk, a luggage rack, a rustic but comfortable bed and an en-suite bathroom with a solar-heated shower. Two family units are available.
Game drives are the main attraction here, although guided bush walks are perfect if you enjoy more intimate insights into the wilderness. And there's certainly lots to see, from the varied vegetation to huge herds of buffalo, dense pods of hippo and sizeable groups of roan, sable and zebra and their attendant predators. With few (if any) other vehicles in the area and the ability to drive off-road, you're likely to have sightings all to yourself – and that's appealing.
Go remote in this splendidly secluded park and find stylish lodges, immense landscapes and good game.
