Facing the river, the thatched main area has been built on a sturdy timber deck that curves around a pair of ancient baobab trees. The bar/lounge area has open sides overlooking the swimming pool, which drops down to a narrow strip of grassy riverbank and the jetty. Most meals are served on the outside pool terrace, with superb views of the Zambezi River. Check your day's sightings in the well-stocked reference library and visit the curio shop for memories.

Sandy paths lead from the main area to eight en-suite thatched wooden chalets set beneath a canopy of riverine trees, slightly back from the water’s edge. Each has a private outside viewing deck overlooking the Zambezi rapids, and the wild interior of Impalila Island at the back. Interiors are classic bush style – exposed thatch and rich timber, with creamy drapes of mosquito netting covering the comfortable twin or double beds, and ceiling fans for the intense summer heat.

Take a motorised boat cruise along the Zambezi and Chobe's labyrinth of waterways and floodplains for frequent sightings of huge herds of elephant, buffalo, pods of hippo, and crocodiles. Lions are regular visitors to the water's edge, and the birding is excellent. Keen fishermen will enjoy an expedition with a specialised guide. Later, stretch your legs on an island bush walk to discover the intriguing smaller wildlife species in this ecologically diverse region.
