About Kicheche Valley Camp

Feel like you have the Mara all to yourself in this luxury oasis in a private conservancy.
Kicheche Valley Camp lies in the 50,000-hectare private Mara Naboisho Conservancy to the northeast of the Masai Mara. Here, set beside an acacia-lined stream in a secluded valley, is an intimate (there are just six tents) permanent camp. Although the landscapes here are perhaps not as impressive as those further west, Kicheche Valley offers productive game drives and guided foot safaris in the bush. Many pastoralists stay on this land, so your chances of some informative community encounters are high.

Property details

The property

Modest and spacious, the main lounge/dining tent is simply done out in traditional safari style, with open sides to allow the welcome breeze to pass through. The floors and steps are of cool stone, and lead to a veranda overlooking a natural spring and the bush beyond. Meals (plentiful and really good) are served at a long table, locally crafted decorative items are dotted around to create a sense of place, and the library is loaded with reference books.

The rooms

Stone footpaths lead to six spacious tents that are set amidst the bush on raised platforms. All are equipped in authentic safari style with welcoming beds, locally designed bedding and rugs, comfortable seating and a writing desk, along with insect-proofing. The wooden floors lead through to the lovely en-suite bathrooms with twin hand basins, and the large windows and wraparound decks make sure you miss none of the action.

Activities

Activities here are centred on the daily game drives. You'll enjoy the less crowded aspect of this rich wildlife area, with its wild cats and herds of elephant (and, if you're lucky, the migration, which sometimes passes through here). Take guided walks to test your bush knowledge, enjoy bush picnics and sundowners with views of the reserve's lovely valleys, rivers and plains, and track nocturnal species on a night safari. Finally, meet the Masai and experience their fascinating culture.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The guides know this land and the animals that live here intimately. You'll leave well-informed and with many, many photos to impress your friends.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Your eco-credentials are well filled here and the camp has a wonderful philosophy of sustainability, powering itself mostly on clean solar energy.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The pathways to and from the rooms aren't particularly well-lit so be careful early in the morning and at night. You will, however, have a Masai guide by your side and a torch!
