The central area shelters beneath a rambling thatched roof, with walls of curtains that can be drawn back for uninterrupted views of the valley. From here, the vantage is spectacular, making it a great spot to plant yourself between the action. There are two restaurants, both serving buffet-style meals, one with a beautiful stone fireplace. There is plenty of seating to go around, and a fabulous bar stocked with the classics and a few specialities.
Accommodation is in 12 simple but adequate canvas tents raised on platforms on a hillside, with polished wooden floors and hot showers, large verandas and valley views. The light-filled Classic safari tents sleep two adults and two children up to 16 years. The Deluxe tents offer the same amenities with a greater degree of space and luxury, comfortably sleeping up to three adults and two children. The decor throughout is earthy and unfussy, but everything is impeccably clean and well-maintained.
Game drives will no doubt occupy much of your time at Kilima – they're absolutely the best way to view the variety and abundance of big game, and the action, which can be intense. If you're staying a little longer, enrich your wilderness experience by exploring the bush on foot, encountering wildlife on horseback, or by getting a bird's-eye view from a hot-air balloon. The sheer variety of creatures and experiences means this place never gets old.
