Sandwiched between two marine reserves and a stone's throw from an elephant-inhabited forest, Kobe Suite Resort sits on a broad swathe of white sand beach on Kenya's northern coast. With coral gardens, mangrove forests, tidal pools and exposed sandbars, the area is lush and varied – perfect for exploring or, equally, simply staying-put. With modern suites, an excellent on-site restaurant and spa, Kobe lacks nothing essential for relaxing. The property

The resort's extensive grounds curve and loop to encompass shady alcoves and hidden nooks. Outdoors, there are places to lounge or dine beneath bamboo pergolas; the C-shaped sofa in the sand is a favourite. There are two pools and plenty of cushioned loungers. Enjoy a meal all day long at the Beach Bar and Restaurant, which serves fresh-caught seafood, fruit and local and international cuisine. The spa has an indoor/outdoor feel to it, overlooking the garden and beach. Bliss out!

The rooms

Ocean suites enjoy a front-row sea view, with patios leading to private, bamboo-protected gardens, and suspended daybeds that make midday kips mandatory. Arched windows permit plenty of light, brushed concrete floors keep things cool, and en-suite bathrooms feature floor-to-ceiling, slate-grey brushed concrete and large showers. Garden suites are similar, but have separate living rooms and grand bedrooms with beds on shallow platforms. Villas enjoy all the perks of self-catering – kitchen, two living rooms, three bathrooms and a broad terrace.

Activities

Swaying with the breeze is a perfectly acceptable way to spend your days, although there's plenty of action here. Fishing, diving, snorkelling and kite-surfing can be experienced within easy reach of the resort. Dolphins, sea turtles and the occasional whale can be seen on a chartered ocean excursion. Take the 10-minute drive to Gede Ruins, a historic stone-walled city of churches and encroaching forests; and Arabuko Sokoke Forest has a high rate of endemic bird- and other wildlife (elephants too).
