A picture-perfect scene of shimmering waters and lush Lala palms, Kulandila Camp sits right on the banks of the Luangwa River. And that means a mind-boggling amount of wildlife to spot, too! The great, winding Luangwa is home to one of the largest populations of hippo and crocodile in the world, not to mention all the land-based beasties that often come to drink on the banks. Meaning to receive or welcome, Kulandila Camp feels like home - if your home also had decks overlooking a vast wilderness and an outdoor bathtub! And the staff will certainly feel like family when it's time to leave...

The property

Undoubtedly, one of the best places to be whilst at Kulandila is the pool, set on a secluded deck, mere metres from the riverfront. The main camp is open-air and easy-going with a lounge area dotted with leather chairs, antique furnishings, a collection of books to peruse, a well-stocked bar, and a dining area that frames the serene vistas. Pathways lead through the trees to the tents and there's always something to see along the way.

The rooms

There are only four stilted tents, each beautifully designed in chic tones with teak furniture, plump, patterned cushions, rugs, and a giant canopy of netting above the bed. This style continues into the bathroom, which boasts dual basins, plenty of open storage space, and an outdoor tub where the river babbles nearby. Each tent opens onto a private veranda, but you could enjoy the view from the indoor daybed, kept cool by a ceiling fan.

Activities

Kulandila enjoys prime real estate in the South Luangwa National Park, famous for its walking safaris and density of wildlife. With the Luangwa River on your doorstep, boating safaris are a definite favourite (at the right time of year), where you'll pass by rafts of hippos and crocodiles, and thirsty elephant and big cats who stop for a drink. Year-round, the camp offers day and night drives - keep your eyes peeled for leopard and packs of African painted dog, and your camera at the ready.
