La Villa makes a charming scene with its sunny facade in the shade of leafy trees. Although it's been around a while, the hotel has a novel feel to it. The restaurant is perfectly placed in the exquisite conservatory and it offers lip-smacking local delicacies served with ice tea - or something stronger from the bar. The L-shaped pool is decked out with loungers in a garden of fruit trees and the lobby is dotted with shelves of antiques.
With original, decorative tiled floors and antique four-poster or Khmer beds, the rooms have a classic feel. The en-suite bathrooms are functional and clean with a shower (and some with a clawfoot tub). Heavy Art Deco furniture, authentic lamps and heirlooms decorate the rooms, which also have a TV, wardrobe, mini bar and tea and coffee facilities. Some rooms are larger with a sitting area while others are more compact and one is separate from the main house with a spot next to the pool.
After you've browsed your way through the markets and tasted a few local favourites, visit the Battambang Museum to learn about the long and often wrenching history of Cambodia. Visit the Well of Shadows, remembering those lost during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. Cycle through the countryside around Battambang where ancient monasteries and vivid rice paddies make a lovely view. At night, stroll through the riverside market, catch a performance by the Cambodian circus or watch the Bat Cave 'show' with a cold brew.
Rural and lovely, let Battambang tempt with its pretty buildings and laidback scenes.
