About Lapa Rios Lodge

A true eco-warrior where the natural delights of Osa Peninsula are yours to revel in.
Lapa Rios or the 'River of Scarlet Macaws' was named after the owners witnessed hundreds of the bright red birds fluttering over the lush forest, a sentiment that captures the enchanting setting. Built as a collection of treehouses, the lodge sits within a 1,000-acre private reserve on the southern-most tip of the Osa Peninsula, where winding pathways treat you to the sight of chattering monkeys, dozing sloths and banana-billed toucans (among a cast of 300 other species). A place to encounter this spectacular wilderness without having to 'rough' it, Lapa Rios prides itself on doing their part to protect it while sharing its wonders with guests. You can even grab lunch with a guide and ask away!

Property details

The property

At the open-sided Brisa Azul, tuck into breakfasts of tropical fruit, pastries and Costa Rican coffee. Then, after a day of working up an appetite, traditional recipes are prepared with locally-sourced ingredients and plated with flair - always best enjoyed with a glass of South American wine and a natter with fellow travellers. When you're not exploring, lounge by the pool, enjoy a peaceful yoga session, or pamper at the spa.

The rooms

Having seemingly sprouted from the ground, Lapa Rios' 17 bungalows are built from sustainable materials like bamboo, native wood and vines, and their design and location on an ocean-facing ridge negates the need for air-con. Feathered lamps and sheer drapes are whimsical and fun - but the practical floor-to-ceiling screens keep out any critters. The bathrooms have a cold and solar-heated shower and organic toiletries, while the private terrace has a rain shower, crochet hammock and glorious views. There are four Lapa Villas with a living area and plunge pool, and the Premier Villas can accommodate up to six guests.

Activities

Guests at Lapa Rios experience all the joys of peninsula living with ample forest and ocean activities. Explore the reserve with naturalist-led day or nighttime hikes - look out for all four of Osa's monkey species and a bevy of rare birdlife - or take to the water and explore the mangroves by kayak. Surfing and snorkelling lessons take place in one of the world's only tropical fjords, and between April and November, there are usually some dolphins and whales around too. Or, if you would like to soak up the sun, choose one of three pristine beaches...
