The extensive grounds are cleverly set around this beautiful, rocky Malagasy wilderness (with plenty of tailored grassy lawns between). The stone architecture indeed compliments the geography. The pool and dining areas are cleverly tucked into the naturally occurring rocks on the property, creating a beautiful setting to relax or dine with dramatic views of the Isalo escarpment. Guests convene in a large open common area with comfortable sofas and air-conditioning though the best seating is by far outdoors. Meals are most often taken alfresco on the stone patio, though occasionally inside by the atmospheric fireplace.
The large chalets housing double and twin rooms are scattered amidst the natural outcrops of rocks, again, mostly built with local stone. All thirty of the rooms are set on the ground-level with their own patios leading out to the lawns. They have a cave-like feeling with the stone walls - in the best possible way; they are elegantly and simply decorated, some with grand four-poster beds. Each has an ensuite bathroom and air-conditioning.
Isalo National Park is a must if you plan to visit this region of Madagascar - see why this country is so famously diverse. Even better, you can explore the rocks and valleys and canyons of Isalo via horseback - take just a few hours, or a half-day tour. Guided walks with a local are informative and insightful, and for the most staggering views around, consider scaling the Isalo massifs on an expertly laid rock climbing course (beginners welcomed). A tour of a precious stone mine (sapphires, amethysts, tourmalines) provides a peek into the geology, history and economy of the region, as does a village tour. Keep as busy or as chilled-out as you want.
