Set up in a clearing next to a bubbling tributary, the open-sided dining tent is simple but scenic. You can also choose to have your meals al fresco in the light of a 'bush chandelier' of old-school kerosine lamps or enjoy a barbecue dinner. Leopard Trails also has a good-sized lounge tent with deep-set blue sofas, fun decor and a small library. There's a small bar where you can grab a drink to enjoy around the firepit and watch the stars.
The camp has two tent variations, which sleep up to three people. In shades of grey and cream, both tents have queen size (or twin) beds, a dressing table, flushable bush toilets and a sit-out. The Leopard Trails Suites have an extra dash of luxury, decorated in dark wooden furnishings and framed scenes of the park. They enjoy a mini fridge, cosy lounge area and rustic, white-tiled shower - the deluxe tents have an outdoor shower. Other amenities include plenty of charging points, mozzie repellent and luggage racks.
The business of Leopard Trails is epic safaris, which take the form of daytime game drives in search of leopard, sloth bear, elephant, purple-faced langur and mugger crocodiles lurking in the water of sand-rimmed lakes. You can also enjoy evening meanders where you could spot mongoose or the miniature loris, and guided bush walks where you'll learn the art of tracking. Cruise across a nearby lake in a traditional 'oruwa' raft for an afternoon of birding before ending the day with G&Ts at sunset.
Beautiful water features and a good leopard population put Wilpattu firmly on the safari-lover’s map.
