About Little Chem Chem

A handful of uber-stylish, vintage tents on a private concession in northern Tanzania.
Not to be outdone by the original Chem Chem, Little Chem Chem is every bit as fabulously unique, chic and wonderfully stylish as its big sister. But what (perhaps) makes the delightfully intimate, five-bedroomed camp even more special is its location - an acacia-fringed oasis on the edge of Tarangire National Park in a 50,000 acre private concession where stately elephant march past the door and cheetah slink down to Lake Burunge right under your nose. And that view! We’re talking sweeping, mountainous backdrops and never-ending grassy plains dotted with absurdly enormous baobabs and spindly-fingered palm trees waving in the wind. It really doesn’t get more romantic than this.

Property details

The property

The main mess tent is welcoming, elegant and rather reminiscent of a wonderful era of bygone safari. But rough it you won’t – there are plenty of sumptuous armchairs, rich Italian throws and plump cushions to make you feel at home (and a very elegant one at that!). Meals can be served in the dining tent next door but dining a deux is welcome. We highly recommend breakfast at your private camp fire in the morning for the first glimpse of the spectacular sunrises.

The rooms

With only five tents, the camp may be small, but the rooms certainly aren’t. All are spacious and light and have a mini dressing room, vanity area and private veranda complete with rocking armchairs for view-gazing in style. Décor blends contemporary fittings and rich fabrics with exactly the right amount of vintage charm in the shape of retro writing desks and charming bucket showers. Three rooms have big king-size beds and two can be made into twins if required.

Activities

Activities focus on game drives in the concession and nearby Tarangire and Lake Manyara. A walk with Nicolas is also a must; watch in awe as he tracks leopard and spots baby elephant from kilometres away. As the camp is in a private concession, night drives are possible as are ‘sunrise safaris’, complete with tea and biscuits. But the real focus here is on enjoying the environment at your own pace, so if you don’t fancy the six am wake up call, stay behind and drink in the magic of your surroundings.

What you'll love

What you'll love

Known as the 'sunrise camp', the morning displays are some of the most magical on the continent. Watch them from your pillows, coffee in hand.

Insiders Tip

Owners Nicolas and Fabia have a real passion for conservation – make sure to chat to them about their work rebuilding the ‘wildlife corridor’ between Manyara and Tarangire, and their efforts to curb poaching.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The area around camp is home to roaring lion, ambling elephant and plenty of other beasties – and there’s not much to stop them coming straight through camp.
