About Little Garonga

Densely vegetated bushveld where animals make the rules
Like its sister camp Garonga, Little Garonga is an exclusive retreat situated in the greater Makalali Conservancy to the west of Kruger. Offering just three suites, it's a popular destination for honeymooners and people who prefer their safaris to be private. There's a feeling at Makalali that the animals are really wild – they are not as habituated to humans as at other reserves and, although you are always in safe hands, you're definitely aware that this land belongs to the wildlife. Nevertheless, you're almost guaranteed sightings of lion, elephant, rhino, cheetah and leopard. Expect friendly hosts, comfortable accommodation and great food.

Property details

The property

The communal area is air conditioned and has both indoor and outdoor lounge areas. Breakfasts are served outdoors on a covered deck with wide views across the savanna; lunch and dinner in the spacious dining area. (Subscribe to the monthly newsletter if you'd like to try some of the chef's recipes.) There's a fireplace for chilly bushveld evenings, a self-service bar and a pool surrounded by loungers and a barbecue set-up. Wi-fi is available throughout.

The rooms

Walkways lead to three thatched, air-conditioned suites. Hambleden Suite sleeps a family of four, has covered indoor and outdoor seating and a bathroom with a luxurious copper tub and indoor and outdoor showers. Outside on the raised deck is a swimming pool and a hammock for dozing. Chiltern and Buckingham are suitable for couples, each with chic but simple furnishings, an en-suite bathroom with tub and shower and a deck with a hammock. Both also have large outdoor showers. Monkeys may visit!

Activities

Private game drives through the dense bush to spot leopard, rhino, elephant, cheetah, civet, monkeys, hippo, zebra, giraffe, lion and more. If the animals are elusive, a tracker will be despatched on foot to follow their footprints in the sand. Watch the birds, spend the night in a treehouse under the stars, investigate the night skies from your own star bath, or have a snooze in your private hammock.

Insiders Tip

Makalali has more than 200 recorded bird species, with migratory birds present from November to April. As this is a Big Five reserve, it's best to book ahead if you'd like a birdwatching safari.

Something to think about

It's always best to arrive in the daylight when it's easier to navigate the roads and there's more time for orientation - and a potential afternoon drive.
