About Little Sand River

Leather, brass and class at this no-expenses-spared camp in the Masai Mara.
Small and stylish, Little Sand River is a charming camp on the banks of the Sand River in southwest Kenya, in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Here, just six tented suites tucked between stands of lush riverine vegetation are a short stroll from sister camp, Sand River. Little Sand River is both exclusive and undeniably glamorous, with its 1920's pioneer feel – think vintage travelling cases, rich leather furnishings, brass telescopes and plush Persian carpets – all under canvas. Game viewing is outstanding throughout the year, but peaks with the arrival of the annual wildebeest migration between July and November.

Property details

The property

Set on a raised timber deck beneath riverine trees, the lounge/dining tent has roll-up canvas sides to make the most of the views across the wilderness to the horizon. The interior is a faithful reflection of the pioneer-style safaris of a century ago – rich carpets, romantic lanterns and elegant vintage furnishings that are rather more reminiscent of Ernest Hemingway than David Livingstone. Visitors are free to use the plunge pool, library and billiards room at neighbouring Sand River Camp.

The rooms

Raised wooden walkways lead from the main area to six incredibly spacious tented suites strung along the river, all sufficiently far enough apart for maximum privacy. The interiors epitomise luxury, with huge four-poster beds beneath mosquito nets, a generous lounge area with an intriguing array of vintage safari memorabilia, and en-suite bathrooms with deep copper-clad bathtubs and romantic outdoor showers. Timber decks in front of each tent have comfortable chairs, perfect for relaxing and watching wildlife drawn to the water.

Activities

Morning and afternoon game drives often yield spectacular sightings of all of the Big Five, together with an abundance of plains game. Take a picnic lunch and stay out all day following the herds across the plains, and expect some thrilling predator viewing – lion, cheetah and leopard are frequently encountered, plus huge numbers of spotted hyena and sometimes an elusive serval. Treat yourself to an early morning hot-air balloon safari and champagne breakfast for something really special.
