The fairly grand double-storey hotel is surrounded by lush tropical gardens, bright with bougainvillaea, frangipani and tall palms. Beyond the reception area, a broad living area opens to a patio and the gardens and, beyond, the beach and lake. High ceilings and large windows allow in plenty of light, revealing the somewhat dated furnishings. There's a restaurant (fish dishes a speciality) and bar; a swimming pool; a well-equipped gym; and free wi-fi (subject to Malawi's unpredictable electricity supply).
Thirty-two rooms sleep two to four guests in simple style with few authentic touches, though they're clean and comfortable. All are split-level with large double doors that open out to tiled patios with lake views. Standard rooms have en-suite bathrooms with showers, air-conditioning, satellite TV and wi-fi. Family rooms sleep four, and the Deluxe rooms are more spacious. In addition, are chalets (our favourite!) – they're detached from the main building, allowing for extra privacy.
Lake Malawi is a watersports lover and sun-lover's dream. Snorkel or dive its tranquil waters, or explore the coastline by boat or kayak. Fishing is popular – the hotel has equipment if you haven't brought your own. In the hotel grounds are a tennis court, pool and plenty of sunbeds. Venture out to nearby Namalenje and Heaven islands for hikes or a snorkelling expedition, as well as wildlife viewing – look out for monkeys, fish eagles and water monitor lizards.
