About Loisaba Starbeds

Your chance to sleep enveloped by the stars and surrounded by the wilderness.
Loisaba Conservancy is an immense, community run conservation area of 10 million acres, and one that’s so enormous, it’s easy to get lost in. So, what better way to enjoy such an incredible space than by spending a few nights under the stars? The famous Loisaba Starbeds are built entirely from locally-sourced products (old Landrover axles play a part in the design of the bed!) and are raised high on stilts on a rocky kopje with incredible views across the valley. Each bed can be rolled out from under the thatch at night, guaranteeing an uninterrupted view of your celestial ceiling. It's here where you'll truly find time and space to recharge your mind and reboot your spirits – and it’s all done in rather comfortable luxury too.

Property details

The property

Guests at Loisaba tend to eat together every evening and there’s a main dining and social area with lots of soft leather coaches for late-night chatter and chess and checker sets for siesta socialising. The walls, floors and furnishings are all made with materials found in the surrounds and the room is also perched on stilts (like the bedrooms) to have as little impact on the environment as possible.

The rooms

The Starbeds are handcrafted, wooden platforms, partially covered with thatch. All have been designed to blend perfectly into the wild landscape and that they do – you won’t even notice your neighbours! A uniquely designed ‘bed on wheels’ is the centrepiece of each platform and can be wheeled onto the deck, making a true al-fresco bedroom. Mosquito nets keep the bugs at bay (but don’t hinder the views) and the ensuite bathrooms have solar-powered hot water and flush toilets.

Activities

Although star-gazing is one of the big attractions, there’s plenty more to keep you occupied at the Starbeds! Morning and evening game drives allow you the chance to spot roaming wildlife and if you fancy digging deeper into the flora and fauna, walks are guided by traditional Samburu tribesmen who know the area by heart. Visitors can also trek through the bush with camels, mountain bike down the escarpment, or horseback-ride through the wild canyons of the two great rivers that span the property.

What you'll love

What you'll love

These are the original Starbeds and you can’t fail to fall in love with the hand-crafted, four-posted beds that roll out into the open for maximum, galaxy-watching action.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

If time allows, spend a morning with the reserve's anti-poaching unit and their four courageous (and very cute!) sniffer dogs. Their jobs are fascinating, dangerous and intriguing, all at once.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The dam that attracts most of the wildlife to the area is around 400 metres from the Starbeds themselves, so for the best viewing you’ll have to drag yourself away from those pillows…
