About Lulimbi Tented Camp

A classic safari in the most extraordinary of destinations
The latest string in Virunga’s bow, and operational since July 2016, Lulimbi Camp lies on the Ishasha River on the eastern edge of the park’s central sector. In fact, Uganda’s safari star Queen Elizabeth National Park lies just across the water. Lulimbi may be a mere 160 kilometres from Virunga’s iconic gorillas in their misty mountain habitat, but the camp could be on a different planet – think Out of Africa savanna with a bounty of classic safari wildlife, including elephant, hippo, buffalo, warthog and Ugandan kob. It’s the beginning of Lulimbi’s venture into modern tourism in the DRC, but we think it’s going to do very well…

Property details

The property

The tented main area sits right on the river, and is the main meeting point for sunset-viewing and hippo-watching. If you’re lucky, you’ll see elephants wading in the water, crossing freely between Uganda and the DRC. Food is simple, but hot and tasty, and the utterly charming staff more than make up for any, er, slightly strange options you might find on your plate!

The rooms

The eight tents at Lulimbi are all perched along the river, and each one is simple but super cosy. This isn’t a camp for luxuries, but you'll find everything you need, including a hot shower, flushing loo and some super comfy beds. There’s a couple of stylish touches in there too, with pretty headboards covered in brightly coloured Congolese fabrics. Outside, the shaded veranda is the perfect spot to watch the comings and goings at the river.

Activities

Just like any classic safari camp, Lulimbi’s days are full of early morning walks to nearby Lake Edward, followed by bush breakfasts under the trees, and meandering game drives. Expect to see buffalo, warthog, elephant, Ugandan kob, topi and a variety of feathered wildlife too. We’ve also heard rumours recently of several excellent lion sightings, so keep those binos with you at all times…
