This beautiful lodge is situated on a rocky outcrop in the central region of the vast Madikwe Game Reserve, which is fast becoming one of South Africa's top malaria-free wildlife destinations. Ten private suites, plus the separate sole-use villa at Little Madikwe Hills, are scattered amongst huge boulders and magnificent Tamboti trees facing out across open plains. It’s a superb choice for a luxurious safari in this scenic northern part of South Africa, which borders Botswana. Expect world-class hospitality, absolute luxury and premium game viewing across a diverse landscape of rugged hills, arid open savannas and lush riverine forests.
The lavish central guest area is an unusual design where traditional thatch and stone incorporates dramatic rock features and giant twisted leadwood trunks, literally bringing the bush inside. An elegant bar and silver service dining room opens out onto the huge raised viewing deck overlooking the waterhole. Nestled amongst the boulders is an outdoor boma, where delicious African bush cuisine is served under the stars. There's a small library, a well-equipped gym, and spa for use between game drives.
Ten vast glass-fronted suites are spread out along a rocky outcrop, with a private villa offering the option of complete exclusivity – perfect for families or a small group travelling together. Décor is sumptuous African chic, with a blend of natural textures and earthy ethnic-inspired fabrics. Modern comforts include air-conditioning and underfloor heating. Each is en-suite, with an outdoor shower, private plunge pool and glorious views over the surrounding bush. The very special honeymoon suite has a secluded outside bath.
The lodge’s central position has the advantage of being within easy reach of most parts of the reserve, and twice-daily game drives offer the chance of encounters with all of the Big Five species, together with abundant plains game, cheetah and rare African wild dogs. Bird watching is equally rewarding. Guided bush walks are offered after breakfast.
The interiors are styled to the nines and the view from your private plunge pool is just sublime.
The private villa (with chef and safari vehicle) is perfectly suited to families and a special kids’ programme caters for younger visitors when parents want some down time.
The lodge is around a 4 - 5 hour drive from Johannesburg and the last stretch includes gravel roads. If you're renting a vehicle, be sure to book one with reasonable clearance.
It’s easily accessible, malaria-free and you’ll spot the Big Five – what’s not to love?
