For ultimate privacy, the house is completely enclosed in its own bougainvillea-filled garden with direct access to the beach through a small gate. Inside, there’s a spacious open-plan living and dining area looking out to the sun-drenched deck and swimming pool and the splendid beach vistas beyond. A private chef and butler will happily cater for your every need, but if you fancy a change, the main lodge with pool, spa and restaurant is a short stroll along the beach.
There are 2 double bedrooms on the ground floor of the house (one is ensuite) and a mezzanine-level with twin beds at the top of a ladder-like staircase, for nimble young limbs! The rooms are organic and stylish with a hint of Zanzibari-chic; think white walls, dark furniture and splashes of bright fabrics and coconut shell details. Stone walls make even the hottest of days feel pleasantly cool inside, but mobile air-conditioning can also be arranged.
Matemwe really is a watersports paradise, and with an activity centre next door to the house, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing, sailing and diving are all easily arranged. You don’t have to limit yourself to the sea, however – visit Stone Town for a dose of Swahili culture, walk to the nearby village or discover new beaches by bicycle. And of course, there’s always a hammock and a good book or a massage to keep you busy.
