Each private villa is completely self sufficient, with private dining and lounge areas. The interiors posses a blend of island funk and luxury. Every spot is designed with relaxation in mind - wonderful veranda areas with soft puffy pillow couches, a hammock, and exceptional views of a private beach and Mnemba island beyond. Private meals are best enjoyed on the deck. Should you wish to enjoy the restaurant’s festivities, Matemwe Retreat is just a ten-minute walk to the main lodge.
Matemwe Retreat villas are en-suite with showers and a sunken bath tub that has views looking out over the Indian Ocean. Large, luxurious king-sized beds with mosquito netting look straight onto the private beach, so you’ll know you’re in paradise from the minute you open your eyes. A large spiral staircase leads to a refreshing plunge pool. Light fabrics, fans and air conditioning also offer respite from island heat, while simple designs create a cool and soothing atmosphere.
Activities at Matemwe are mostly aquatic and as such are governed by the tides. Guests can partake in snorkeling, diving, canoeing, guided reef walks, kite surfing, deep sea fishing, scenic kayak tours along the reef, boating and dhow trips. There are also day trips to explore the island’s ancient history, Jozani forest and exotic spice trade. If all that has you exhausted, there’s always a rejuvenating treatment on hand at the main lodge’s spa. Just ask your personal butler to help you organise your activities.
The Retreats are all about indulgence, from the private butler that will cater to your every whim, your personally designed, fresh-from-the-sea menu, and the bathtubs big enough for three.
The Asilia Spa at the main lodge is dreamy, but what’s even more heavenly is a private treatment on the veranda of your Retreat. Try the Abhyanga Indian oil therapy or the Thulia Head Massage for the ultimate treat.
Access to the Retreats is up a steep flight of stairs which although guarantees ultimate privacy can make for a bit of a walk if you want to pop to the beach or the main bar and restaurant.
