Au naturel as they come, the craggy main building encourages as much al fresco dining as possible (with these views, why wouldn't you?) or step inside for a cosy, more intimate meal by candlelight. The steak topped with traditional Maasai sauce is a favourite! Right next to the terrace bar, there is a freeform stone pool for midday cool-downs, and a thatched, open-air spa to enjoy some R&R. On clear evenings, sit down for a private bonfire as the sounds of the Serengeti pierce the air.
The rooms follow suit with stone walls, heavyset wooden beds, and open-air showers. There are a number of two-bed rooms and suites, which all have a 'star roof' above the bed and plush leather sofas. There are 24 tented chalets in total with just the right mix of comforts and canvas. The romantic Jacuzzi on the patio is a welcome extra! For families, there are suites with a spacious lounge and dining table. Decorated in bright, wildlife-inspired artwork, the rooms also have a fan, flat-screen TV and rustic but well-kept bathrooms.
We probably don't have to do much convincing about the iconic Serengeti, but from Mbalageti's home near the river and Dutwa Plains, June brings the herds of heaving wildebeest, zebra and plains game on their great pilgrimage to the Masai Mara. Take off at dusk for full or half-day drives amongst this immense spectacle (capped with sundowners, of course), spy on the smaller creatures on a bush walk, or soar above this epic scene in a hot air balloon. If you can swing it, ask for Mr Six as your guide!
