Style and sophistication in a hotel-style lodge in the central area of the South Luangwa.

Just inside the park gate, overlooking a watery lagoon filled with splashing hippo and emerald Nile cabbages, is the Bush Camp Company’s flagship property, Mfuwe Lodge. With a central location and access to a network of roads and tracks that wind past lagoons, the Luangwa River and pretty wooded areas, game viewing is unsurpassed. Many of Africa’s most iconic species are practically on the doorstep and with a contemporary and funky main area to relax in and on-site spa, we wouldn’t blame you for not leaving the lodge itself.

The property

At the main lodge, you’ll find high ceilings and polished floors complimented by artistic photographs, rich fabrics and beautiful furniture. Sofas and dining tables have unrivalled views of the passing wildlife and the swimming pool is perfectly positioned on the edge of the lagoon. A cosy library offers a treasure trove of nature books and the award-winning spa is tucked away in a secluded and shady spot.

The rooms

Mfuwe Lodge is one of the largest lodges in the South Luangwa and has 18 timber and thatch chalets scattered on the bank between the two lagoons, including 2 suites and 3 family rooms. Stylish and contemporary, not a single detail has been forgotten. All rooms have large beds, writing desks, fans, en-suite bathrooms with walk-in rain shower and private verandas with welcoming hanging chairs for a spot of post-safari relaxation.

Activities

Led by knowledgeable and friendly guides in a fleet of open-sided 4WD Landrovers, game drives from Mfuwe Lodge are comfortable and always produce good wildlife viewing however it’s not uncommon to see a number of other vehicles in this section of the park. Try combining a stay here with a more remote bush camp for a true South Luangwa experience. Walking safaris are also offered, accompanied by a National Parks armed guard.

The choice you’ll have in just about everything. Fancy a morning in the spa or a lazy afternoon in the pool? Absolutely. Want to visit a local school instead of a game drive? That won’t be a problem.

Insiders Tip

Every year during October and November, guests and staff make way for a family of elephants who wander through reception to feast on the mango trees in the middle of camp. Definitely a sight not to be missed.

Something to think about

The lodge is one of the largest in the park and if you’re not expecting it, the waiting 4x4s, spa facilities and slightly more commercial nature may come as a surprise.
