About Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari

Wake up to warthogs on your doorstep and lions in the distance
The first thing you'll notice about Gorongosa National Park is its dramatic scenery, and the animals – lion, elephant, hippo, warthog, antelope and amazing birdlife. Indeed, the richness of the wildlife is miraculous when you consider how denuded the park was when the country's civil war ended in the 1990s. All is peaceful now, especially at Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari in the sanctuary's heart. Spend nights in a bungalow or villa, or beneath the stars, and wake to the sounds of the wild. You won't find first-world sophistication, but Montebelo is a good choice if nature is your passion.

Property details

The property

Make your way to the main lodge for a drink at the bar and meals served on the thatched, open-fronted terrace. Two cool pools, one for kids and another for adults, are great for rinsing off the dust after a game drive. Muscles in a knot? Head to the spa for some professional treatments. Weddings can be arranged, and conferences too. There's air-conditioning throughout, and internet access in the public areas.

The rooms

Accommodation is in 30 large bungalows and three top-class villas, all decorated in natural earth tones, with netted beds, modern bathrooms, air-conditioning for those hot summer months. You will be comfortable. Prefer holidays under canvas? The campsite has everything you need, including a bathroom and shower area with hot water, a grill and a covered communal area. Spend some hours trying to catch that perfect warthog-on-the-lawn photograph for your online fans!

Activities

When taking in a morning or late-afternoon game drive, keep in mind that Gorongosa lies at the southern tip of the Great Rift Valley. The place is a natural tapestry. Follow hidden paths with a guide for up-close viewings of hippos and elephants. Visit Mount Gorongosa to see the stunning green-headed oriole, Livingstone’s turaco and a host of other lifers. Hike to Murombozi River waterfall, and get great pics on a canoe safari. Note: All activities incur an extra charge.

Insiders Tip

The menu is wide and varied, although not haute cuisine. If it's available, order Frango à Zambeziana – chicken with garlic and coconut milk. You won't be disappointed!

Warthogs often roam the lodge's grounds – they're intriguing to watch, but don't get too close.
