A three-hour drive from Cape Town, through some of most picturesque winelands imaginable, the brand-new Morukuru Beach Lodge lies in the 36,000-hectare De Hoop Nature Reserve, a pristine coastal fynbos region with World Heritage Site status. Not only is this unique region near South Africa's southernmost tip of Cape Agulhas, it's also one of the best places to see southern right whales (from July to Sept). The artfully constructed ecolodge is a sprawl of glass and natural rocks, capitalising on the scenery: limestone cliffs, secluded bays, and fynbos-shrouded white dunes. Expect African wildlife (marine and terrestrial), and a private beach.

This brand-new lodge is grounded in exceptionally smart design that makes ecofriendly both look and feel good. With clean lines, broad open-plan spaces, wide sea-facing windows, natural-rock fireplaces and loads of nature-inspired details, the lounge, restaurant and bar areas are seductively tranquil retreats. Curl up in a cosy chair or cushioned window-seat to read and scan the ocean, and enjoy relaxed, delicious meals. The sheltered swimming pool and patio have sea views, and there's a fire pit for convivial evenings.
Four Ocean Suites tucked into the fynbos hillside have magnificent ocean views through their floor-to-ceiling glass doors; the Dune View Suite makes the most of the dune landscape. All suites are beautifully furnished in minimalist style, with a king-sized bed (or two doubles) and a large window-seat. The floors are of wood (with underfloor heating!), the furniture is superbly comfortable, and there's a fireplace for chilly nights. The en-suite bathrooms have walk-in rain showers, stand-alone baths and double basins.
In the vein of safari lodges everywhere, Morukuru offers two complimentary guided activities a day. But here they accommodate the easygoing pace of a beach holiday. Explore life in the rock pools on a leisurely marine walk – a great option for kids. Take a fynbos walk, a mountain-bike excursion, or a 4x4 drive to get close to the local wildlife (the resident 86 mammal species include bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, eland, and seabirds). Snorkel the shallows or go sandboarding.
Inspired by 'Operation Phoenix', the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation supports wildlife conservation and community initiatives in and around Madikwe Game Reserve. Key projects include partnerships with Molatedi Village, support for local schools and nature reserves, and the 'Safaris with a Purpose' project. Additionally, the 'Pack for a Purpose' initiative encourages travellers to bring supplies for community projects. A contribution of $5,20 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
A little-explored gem where hills roll into the ocean and nature reserves rub against golden sands.
